How Proper Vehicle Maintenance Improves Fuel Efficiency

Fuel costs are a major cost of doing business when operating a fleet of any size. Purchasing new vehicles can significantly reduce fuel cost, but can be prohibitive as a capital investment. Most fleet managers are unable to replace their entire fleet and may continue to operate older vehicles for some time. This means that proper maintenance to improve and maintain fuel efficiency is an important, and cost-effective, way of reducing overall costs.

Here are a few things you can do to maintain fuel efficiency in cars and trucks:

How Eco-Driving Impacts Fleet Fuel Economy

eco-drivingThe term “eco driving” refers to a way of driving that’s smarter and more fuel-efficient. And while its ultimate goal is reducing pollution, eco-driving can also help cut down on fuel costs.

How much does it help? In 2013, the Volvo Group issued a report that found that eco-driving improved fuel economy in trucks by 10 to 15 percent.

But how do truck drivers embrace eco-driving? SmartDrive performed a study in 2011 that looked at the impact of eco-driving on truck fleets. After evaluating fuel consumption and driver performance for 695 Class 8 tractor trailers and their drivers, the study found that 80 percent of fuel waste could be avoided through softer driving. Crude Oil Continues Around $100

The price of crude oil has a direct correlation to diesel fuel prices. Over the past few months, crude oil has drifted above and below $100 given positive or negative information. Crude Oil Prices Gain, Gas Prices and Diesel Fuel Prices Follow

On Friday, President Barack Obama told auto club AAA in an interview Friday that the tension in Iran and the Middle East is adding $29 to $30 a barrel to the price of oil. That would mean that its adding 60-90 cents per gallon to gas prices and diesel fuel prices. I am not sure if there is a $30 premium. I would say $20 maybe but even that is difficult to determine. We have many different things that are adding to the price of oil.
